North Raises the Rake at the USHL Fall Classic
The Minnesota Scouting Report & 4 Membership Staff couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of 3rd Annual USHL Fall Classic Event. In attendance were 33 of the top Minnesota players of this hockey season’s Sophomore and Freshman Class. The main purpose of the trip to Sioux City was to educate Minnesota hockey players what it takes to play at the next level. With the USHL being the best league and feeding system into NCAA Hockey, it was clearly a great learning experience for players who truly want to continue playing, while pursuing an education, after high school hockey.
This was the first year we hosted the North vs. South in the Minnesota Sophomore Series. It was a best-of-3 game series, where the North won 2 of 3 games, and was the first team to Raise the Rake (The Minnesota Sophomore Series Trophy). Even though the trip was clearly about the experience, education, and seeing the USHL up close and personal, the games and competition were phenomenal. North won the first game 3 to 0, but the entire game lacked the pace and skills exhibited in games 2 and 3. “The boys had a long bus trip and didn’t get in until 11pm and had to be on the ice at 7am,” said Reinholz. The boys were waking up and getting used to playing together. It also didn’t help they were a little nervous playing in Sioux City’s home rink with Waterloo coaches (Shane Fukushima & Derrick Johnson) on the North bench, and Sioux City’s Rick Comley on the South bench.

The 4 Membership staff creates a partnership with Justin Johnson and The Mental Edge

Justin Johnson
The Staff is also excited to announce that Justin Johnson and Steve Debus are the Directors of Goalie Development for the 4 Membership Program in 2010
Justin Johnson has been a hockey goaltender for over twenty years. He grew up playing in the Blaine Youth Hockey Association through High School where he set school records, captained a State Consolation Championship team, and was selected All-State Honorable Mention in 1999. After two years of competing at the junior A level, Justin went on to play at the Division I level for four years with the University of Minnesota's Golden Gophers where he was selected for the 2003 WCHA All-Tournament Team, and was a two-time National Champion in the years of 2002 and 2003.
Justin graduated from Minnesota in 2005 with a major in psychology and was a member of the WCHA All-Academic Team, a U of M Scholar Athlete and a three-time recipient of the Donald M. Clark Community Service Award, for his active role within the community.
Since graduation, Justin joined his longtime mentor Shaun Goodsell as a performance coach with Mental Edge, which is a company whose goal is to help athletes develop the life skills necessary to deal with the pressures of competition and help them climb through adversity with focus and discipline.
During his time with Mental Edge Justin authored the training manual Game Day which is an interactive and completely customized preparation manual for hockey goaltenders. In addition to Game Day, Justin has contributed his expertise to numerous publications including the USA Hockey Goaltending Coaches Manual, Let’s Play Hockey, VYPE Magazine and a monthly column in Goalies’ World Magazine.
Justin currently serves as USA Hockey’s Minnesota District Associate Goalie Coach-in- Chief and is entering his fourth year coaching goaltenders in the WCHA. This season Justin has returned to his alma mater to coach both the Men and Women Gopher goalies. For three years prior he was the goaltending coach for St. Cloud State Men’s program. During his tenure at St. Cloud he coached Hobey Baker Finalist Bobby Goepfert, and NHL Draft Picks Jase Weslosky and Dan Dunn. Justin’s on ice coaching experience also includes over 12 years with various camps including US National Development Camps.
Over the years Justin has developed an ability to work effectively with goalies of all ages and athletic goals. Because of Justin's highly competitive and elite athletic background and also his personal experiences overcoming adversity in his athletic career. His ability to combine a solid understanding of the demands of goaltending physically, psychologically and experientially gives him an edge in working with goalies of all ages and backgrounds.
