PJ Atherton: ID-Hockey Director

PJ Atherton has been playing hockey for over 20 years. He began playing in the Edina Youth Hockey Association. PJ went on to play varsity hockey for the Edina Hornets where he participated in two state tournaments and was an all-conference selection.

After high school PJ went on to play two seasons in the USHL for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders. While in the USHL PJ was a two-time selection to the All-Star/Top Prospects game and played for Team USA in the Viking Cup in Camarose, Alberta.

Following his career in the USHL PJ committed to play for his hometown University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, realizing a life-long dream. While playing for the Gophers PJ won a national championship in 2002-2003. PJ achieved another life-long goal when he was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

After enjoying a four-year career and the University of Minnesota PJ turned pro with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. PJ has enjoyed a five-year professional career playing both in North America as well as Europe.

PJ has been coaching hockey players for five years. He brings the same passion and intensity that made him successful as a player to his coaching. He has learned under some of the best coaches in the world including Don Lucia, Mike Guentzel and Mike Babcock. PJ believes that there is a major lack of developing defensemen occurring in hockey today. He aims to become the premiere trainer of defensemen in Minnesota and eventually the country.
